While we often mistake high usage rates for brand loyalty, the reality is that most products have migrated into the Kano Model’s "Must-be" (Basic) category. They provide no satisfaction when they function, yet they cause massive cognitive and emotional friction when they fail. We are living in an era of unprecedented technological capability, yet our products increasingly fail to add visceral value because they have prioritized metric extraction over human agency.
The Path to Apathy: From Innovation to Extraction
How did we reach this state of functional apathy? The answer lies in the natural lifecycle of a mature market. When a category is young, competition is driven by utility and "magic." But as technologies become standardized, products inevitably become commodities.
This is the "Race to the Bottom"—a cycle where the struggle for market dominance comes at the direct expense of the user’s dignity. When companies hit a ceiling on satisfaction, they often turn to Deceptive Design (Dark UX) to artificially inflate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
The AI Accelerant: From Static Tricks to Psychological Traps

2. Measure "Value-in-Use" with the HEART Framework
Conversion rates tell us that a user is there, but not if they are successful. We must advocate for Human-Centered KPIs that measure quality of outcome.

Using AI to manipulate a user into a click or a purchase is a "cheap win"—a short-term boost to a quarterly KPI that ignores the massive emotional technical debt being accrued. It is the strategy of a commodity, not a leader.
A true AI agent should not be a digital magician performing tricks to hit a conversion target; it should be a cognitive partner that provides the user with the clarity and control they need to make the best decisions for themselves. When an AI genuinely prioritizes the user's interests, it moves beyond the category of a commodity and into the category of a trusted tool.
In the long run, success in product design isn't measured in the clicks we extract, but in the trust we earn. By choosing agency over automation and honesty over mimicry, we don't just build better AI—we build a digital world that humans can actually care about.
